Become a Volunteer

The Wizard’s Wardrobe - where reading is magic!

Our tutors are a dedicated group of community members with one thing in common – the desire to give some of their time to make a child feel like they are the center of their attention.

If you’d like to volunteer as a tutor click on the application below and email it to info@wizardswardrobe.org or mail it to P.O. Box 61, Albany, NY  12201:

Intro

Volunteers are the heart of the Wizard’s Wardrobe operation. All our tutors are volunteers, as are our librarian, our trainers, and our program director. Here are some of the ways that YOU could join us:

Transportation

Some of our students need transportation from their school to the Wizard’s Wardrobe. Two adult volunteers are required in each car transporting students. The driver must meet our insurance and safe-driving requirements. Can you help?

Building Maintenance

Our inviting tutoring space needs regular routine maintenance and seasonal cleaning. Can you help?

Librarian

Our volunteer librarian orders and receives new books, catalogs and shelves them, re-shelves them after use, and creates monthly projects and themes for our students. Can you help her?

Administrative

Gathering and compiling tutor reports of hours and efforts, tracking grant-related expenses, monitoring the screening of new volunteers, generating interim and year-end progress reports, procuring needed supplies and snacks for our students – all these and more are vital administrative tasks. Would you like to help?

Social Media

The Wizard’s Wardrobe has a social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram that must be kept current to be effective. Can you help us spread the word?

Development

From planning for our signature Readers Theater Event to everyday fundraising, maintaining financial support for our programs is vital. Can you help?

Other

Are you an artist? A tech maven? Do you have other skills we could use?

If you believe in our mission and want to help, please , click on the application below and email it to info@wizardswardrobe.org or mail it to P.O. Box 61, Albany, NY  12201.

Tutor Training occurs on two Saturdays (usually consecutive). The goals of our training are to equip tutors with an understanding of how race and poverty impact many of our students, provides strategies for teaching the components of reading, gives insights into dealing with student challenges, and prepares our tutors to create lesson plans. We do not attempt to make tutors professional teachers, but we do give them the tools needed to begin tutoring. In addition, we provide monthly supplemental workshops. There is much to learn, and the rewards are many. For more information, please contact Carol Green (info@wizardswardrobe.org).
